Fortescue Executive Sacked For Bullying Sexual Harassment

The global metal mining company has officially stood down a senior executive after law firm MinterEllison’s months-long investigation found allegations first disclosed in a social media post.

A senior executive at Fortescue Mining has been officially terminated after first being suspended in August of this year, concluding an investigation into allegations of long-term misconduct, including that of sexual harassment.

In a statement shared with HR Leader, a Fortescue spokesman said: “MinterEllison’s investigation into allegations concerning a Fortescue executive has concluded.

“The investigation found conduct that breached Fortescue’s policies, as well as our Values. The Board sub-committee overseeing the matter therefore ceased the individual’s contract.

“Fortescue is committed to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace for all employees and contractors.

“Sexual harassment, bullying, and other behaviour that makes people feel unsafe [have] no place at Fortescue. Everyone, regardless of their role or seniority, is expected to meet the standards set by our Values.

“This was a thorough and independent investigation, and we thank those who participated and have offered them ongoing support.”

The employee was first suspended in August after a female colleague made accusations of bullying and sexual harassment.

As reported by The Australian Financial Review, the harassment was initially disclosed in a social media post that detailed alleged psychological abuse and harassment over multiple years. The man was also alleged to have “forcibly” entered the woman’s home and requested she shave his back.

Law firm MinterEllison initially conducted the investigation while the employee worked at the company, with Fortescue later deciding that “the employee who is the subject of allegations will not undertake any work for Fortescue while the investigation continues”.

Earlier this year, a class action was filed against Fortescue Mining by JGA Saddler, alleging a systemic culture of sexual harassment and violence against female staff.
