HR Leader understands that Origin Energy has undertaken two rounds of “mass” redundancies to date in 2025, shifting Australia-based roles offshore in hopes of delivering the “best outcomes” for customers.
According to reports first obtained by HR Leader, Australia’s largest energy retailer, Origin Energy Australia, has committed two rounds of mass redundancies in 2025, opting to offshore Australia-based roles to drive outcome delivery for both the company and its customers.
HR Leader reached out to Origin Energy to confirm the extent of the “mass” redundancies that have thus far occurred, to which an Origin Energy spokesperson said:
“We employ a strong, local workforce of more than 5,000 people across Australia but will continue to utilise some offshore support to help deliver the best outcomes for our business and customers.
“We empathise with staff members who have been impacted by recent changes and have offered a range of support options.”
When queried again on the exact number of staff affected by the alleged “mass” offshoring of roles in 2025, the spokesperson added: “We periodically review our operations to ensure we are optimally set up to execute Origin’s strategy.
“In reviewing our operations, there will be changes for some of our teams from time to time, and this may result in a reduction in roles.”
As previously reported by HR Leader, in a similar move, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners offshored a number of Australia-based roles to the Philippines as a “last resort”.
In a previous statement given to HR Leader, a Coca-Cola Europacific Partners spokesperson confirmed the offshore move, stating that the “transformation will see a reduction of roles in our local finance team”.
“Our ambition always is to redeploy wherever possible, with redundancies a last resort. We are working closely with our employees to navigate what this may look like,” said the spokesperson.
“Transactional tasks and activities such as reporting will be primarily managed by our ISS team based in the Philippines. This will help refocus the scope of our Australia-based employees to concentrate on high-quality commercial partnering, strategic planning, and complex analysis, ensuring we continue to deliver exceptional value to stakeholders.”
More to come.
