Skills levels continuously need to be developed as new processes and technology emerge, shifting the way we work. This has resulted in a greater emphasis being placed on education and training opportunities.

The significance of this change was highlighted by Jobs and Skills Australia, which found that by May 2028, every position in Australia will require at least a secondary education, with 86 per cent necessitating a tertiary qualification.

ASPL Group chief executive Kris Grant said employers must recognise this increasing importance of training and education: “As the nature of work continues to evolve, the demand for higher skill levels across various sectors has become increasingly evident. We must prioritise education and training to ensure our workforce remains competitive and resilient,” she said.

“Education and training are not only essential for individual career advancement but also for our nation’s economic prosperity. By equipping ourselves with the necessary qualifications and skills, we can collectively work towards a stronger and more resilient Australia.”

This means employers must invest in learning and development opportunities to keep up with the evolution. The Jobs and Skills Australia report also revealed that 88 per cent of the total employment growth in the year leading up to August 2023 occurred in occupations that typically demand post-school qualifications.

“From an employer’s perspective, these statistics highlight the increasing need for a highly skilled workforce to remain competitive in today’s dynamic business environment. Businesses across various sectors are witnessing a growing demand for specialised skills and expertise. As such, employers must invest in training and upskilling their workforce to ensure they can meet these evolving requirements,” Ms Grant explained.

“It’s not only about individual career development; it’s about businesses thriving and contributing to the overall prosperity of the nation. I encourage employers to recognise the value of investing in their employees’ education and training to foster a skilled workforce that can be equipped for the future.”

She concluded: “The evolving job landscape demands a workforce equipped with specialised skills and knowledge, underscoring the imperative for Australians to invest in post-school qualifications.”
