Tech and its help in reducing retail crime

By Jack Campbell | |4 minute read

Our frontline workers suffer all kinds of abuse at the hands of customers. Tech can be an effective way to mitigate issues and protect these vulnerable workers.

There are a variety of ways that tech can assist in reducing retail crime. According to Andrew Myers, WorkJam’s Asia-Pacific managing director, the benefits are “multifaceted”.

“Technology serves as a multifaceted tool in reducing retail crime, providing a combination of surveillance, analytics, and preventive measures to create a more secure retail environment. With high-resolution CCTV cameras, equipped with advanced analytics, this technology can monitor store activities and detect suspicious behaviour,” said Mr Myers.

“Technology contributes to the protection of frontline employees by streamlining compliance, improving communication (through specialised security communication channels), and enhancing overall workplace management. Technology provides frontline employees with the training and education required to improve awareness of their safety in the workplace.”

Over the holidays, these protections will become as important as ever as retail shopping ramps. This time of year is the perfect time to ensure processes are in place to protect at-risk employees.

“With the influx of Christmas casuals and new starters over the busy festive season, basic training is sometimes overlooked; however, the importance of training cannot be overstated,” Mr Myers said.

“Additionally, during this period, workplaces can often be understaffed, increasing their risk of theft. Being equipped with the right scheduling tools, including an open shift marketplace, ensures management is aware and can minimise understaffed stores.”

An effective solution is to keep employees up to date with relevant training. This ensures compliance is met and staff are knowledgeable on how to approach tricky situations.

Mr Myers continued: “Training is essential for reducing retail crimes, as it equips employees with the knowledge and skills needed to adhere to regulations, follow proper procedures and handle various situations appropriately. Well-trained employees can proactively identify potential risks and respond with the correct actions, contributing to a more efficient, safe, and productive workplace.”

He concluded: “It is also important to ensure your staff are well versed in utilising security communication channels. Staff members need to stay informed and vigilant about real-time events. Technology offers a means to promptly and effectively notify security personnel of any suspicious behaviour, prioritising both a swift response and staff safety.”
